Herz-Rose Park

In late 2022, as part of the Terre Haute Parks Department master plan, the City of Terre Haute contracted Land Stewards Design Group to create a concept for the complete redesign of Herz-Rose Park. Art Spaces has partnered with the City to bring a significant work of public art to the site, developed through extensive community engagement. Residents have expressed a strong desire for interaction and communication within the park, recalling a time when neighborhood businesses fostered connection and belonging. This project provides an opportunity to restore that sense of community through both the park’s design and the new artwork.

Artist Greg Mueller, after visiting Terre Haute, developed a concept inspired by a mailbox—symbolizing both receiving and sending communication. His design envisions a sculpture that doubles as a communication hub, sharing links to resources and events across the city. The work will also feature arches lined with cutout tracings of hands from community members, gathered through partnerships with local schools and youth centers. These personal contributions will become a permanent part of the artwork, weaving the community’s presence directly into the piece.

The design was first shared with residents during the 2023 Ryves Youth Center Family Night, where families provided input on park features and children traced their hands for inclusion in the sculpture. Community feedback continues to shape both the park and artwork as the project moves forward. Art Spaces is grateful to CenterPoint Energy Foundation for their support in helping bring this vision to life.

The installation will be located at Herz Rose Park at 1515 Locust Street when it is completed.
